3 KEY DIY JOBS FOR AUTUMN

Autumn has arrived and with it the final chance to carry out some important home improvement tasks before the dark winter days are upon us.

Here are three jobs which Leyland SDM advise are on your immediate DIY checklist over the coming weeks.

Cut out the draughts

During soaring temperatures in the summer, draughts in the house are often seen as a welcome relief.

That viewpoint turns full circle post-September as nip in the air created by draughts become more pronounced.

From the areas around doors to windows, loft hatches, keyholes and letter boxes and around skirting boards, there are numerous entry points into the homes for draughts.

There are several possible solutions but you won’t go too far wrong if you use self-adhesive strips or tapes or draught excluders such as our Exitex Draught Excluder Vinyl Tape Foam.

Taking some time to draught-proof your home now will make the world of difference over the coming months – both to the temperature in your home and to your bank balance through money saved from lower heating bills.

Forget a de-clutter – it’s time to de-gutter!

We are entering the danger period for the guttering. Falling leaves and other such debris means we are reaching the perfect storm for gutter issues.

It’s a danger period for gullies, gutters and downpipes so make sure they remain free flowing and ensure there are no damp issues in the property as a result.

Before autumn is out, we would suggest you safely put up a ladder, don a pair of gloves and scoop out the waste matter with your hands or a trowel.

Washing out the gutter as a final task to complete the job will ensure your guttering is totally clear of any danger.

Get your garden set for winter

In many ways, autumn can be just as an important time for garden work at your property as any other.

Several jobs should be carried out before the true onset of winter including applying weatherproof paint to any woodwork including garden sheds and fencing, planting early flowering bulbs and – of course – the dreaded raking up of leaves.
