TOP TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR BATHROOM
QUICK WINS TO BLITZ YOUR BATHROOM
Sprucing up your bathroom is a job never far from the mind of any DIYer.
It’s a room that can add real value to a property and needs more TLC than most other areas of the home.
So how can you make a real difference with a relatively small outlay when it comes to time and money?
Grouting the tiles can make a huge impact to improve the look and feel of the bathroom. Here are our top tips for how to grout tiles:
- Step 1: Remove any debris from between the tiles, it’s time to get to work.
- Step 2: Pour the grout and water into a mixing bucket and leave it to stand for a few minutes.
- Step 3: Apply the grout evenly to fill the joints before removing any excess grout with, firstly, a dry sponge, and then a slightly moist one.
- Step 4: After a period of time – usually specified on the instructions of the grout – the area will dry and you can enjoy the fruits of your labour.
A NEW COAT OF PAINT
As with any room in the house, a fresh lick of paint in the bathroom can make all the difference.
Obviously, it’s important to follow all the basic painting rules – covering surfaces and objects and using a scraper to remove old paint to name but two – but there is some bathroom specific guidance that is worth bearing in mind.
Most important is selecting the right paint. The unique environment that is created in a bathroom means it’s important to use paint with a high level of water-resistant properties.
Matt paint, semi-gloss and high-gloss are amongst the paints to focus on.
Once you have completed the job, keep your bathroom well ventilated by opening windows when you can and cleaning your painted surfaces regularly.
Bathroom fixtures will be amongst the smallest items in your room but may also be amongst the most eye-catching.
Selecting the right taps and showerheads can make a huge difference to how aesthetically pleasing your bathroom is.
Of course, it all comes down to individual choice but – as a general rule of thumb – chrome fixtures are more suited to a traditional bathroom while a modern feel increasingly lends itself to black accessories.
MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL
The addition of a classy mirror can be an easy way to send the style soaring in your bathroom.
Installation should be relatively straight-forward. Use a carbide-tipped or diamond-tipped drill bit and apply masking tape to the wall so that the drill bit doesn’t slip.
Placement is also crucial to maximising the illusion of light. Place your mirror on the opposite wall to a window and the light will reflect through the room.
