Five tips to make your room appear bigger

As the old saying goes, size isn’t everything. But, whether someone is living in a compact flat or apartment or has a small room in their house, most people would jump at the chance to make certain rooms in their house feel bigger than they actually are.

The question is, how do you achieve that? Here at Leyland SDM we have some key tips to help you on your way.

1. Get your colour scheme right

In general terms, the lighter the colours used in a room, the bigger a room will appear. Using dark colours in an area of the house where space is an issue results in it feeling like the walls are closing in.

A light room provides a more reflective, open and airy atmosphere. Off-whites, blues and greens are suggested to ensure a room looks bigger and, in turn, far more inviting.

Our paint mixing service, available in each of our 23 branches, could be the key to achieving the precise shade you are seeking.

Another alternative is the Dulux Light + Space Matt, complete with its LumiTec formulation to make any room feel lighter and available in around 30 colours.

2. Mirror, mirror on the wall

The hanging of a mirror on a wall in any small room can make the world of difference.

A mirror will reflect light, add an illusion of depth and create a greater sense of openness. A strategically placed mirror near a window to reflect the outdoors can be an extremely effective way of adding perceived size to a room.

A large mirror – or a collection of small ones – will provide maximum effect.

3. Making the most of storage

A lot of clutter in a room can immediately shrink its size. Toys, magazines or even remote controls littered around the floor will soon eat up the space.

Whether it be through a stylish basket or a piece of multi-functional furniture - which can be used as storage space, a chair or table - the ability to declutter will instantly make it look roomier.

4. Light it up

When it comes to considering lighting in a small room, bright is best.

Multiple light fittings could be the answer, combining ceiling lights with spotlights, wall lights and table lamps.

A key tip, however, is to make sure the light is spread evenly around the room rather than pooled into one area.

5. Open it up

It may feel pretty dramatic but removing a door, or even knocking down a wall, to create an open plan feel can make a significant difference.

Additional space is immediately opened up and you can always hang some kind of curtain across the newly-vacated space if you want to retain an element of cosiness.
